Recently we’ve been working quite a bit in Bedfordshire. Now it’s true that Bedfordshire isn’t a county particularly known for office furniture, but many people do still work there and they need office desks and chairs. Anyway… it’s funny what you discover about a place just by spending more time there. Some discoveries are simply odd bits of trivia that make you grin…
Furnishing you with a smile…
… Like the fact that back in 1795, the Government introduced a hair powder tax, which wasn’t the most popular thing to do bearing in mind the number of wigs being worn at the time. In response to this, The 5th Duke of Bedford, Francis Russell, being a feisty fellow, decided to create a new hairstyle that negated the need for powder. It was cropped and highly-waxed instead, and became known as ‘The Bedford Level’…
Definitely a bit of trivia to make you smile, eh? But there are other discoveries, however, that get the old grey matter working a bit more…
… Take Woburn Safari Park, for example. A great example of the fabulous British spirit of not giving up. Woburn Safari Park, in Bedfordshire, was opened in 1970 by the Duke of Bedford, in a bid to significantly improve the financial position of the estate and help repair the Abbey. Let’s face it, it was a drastic change of direction by any standard.
So when we got chatting about this, whilst delivering some office furniture to a business in Luton, we realised just how often CamHam played a part in helping businesses to make change too.
You probably think we’re just being daft, now, but actually we mean this most sincerely. The recent recession and tough times have seen many companies need to review what they do and shift things about. Either via downsizing, with office moves, office clearouts and all-over changes to the office furniture setup occurring. Or via rebranding, with offices being treated to a complete revamp; with new office furniture, in new colours. It has to be said that a new reception area can presen a picture of success.
Fanning the flames…
Either way, we’ve realised that the shifts in office furniture requirements in a business are an important way of communicating the seriousness of change to employees. As well as physically projecting the start of change in a business owner’s mind, of course. A new office layout, with either brand new office furniture, or beautifully matching used office furniture, is the equivalent of taking that deep breath one takes before starting a new challenge. It’s an out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new type thing.

Now, of course, that’s not an exhaustive list. It’s simply some ideas we came up with as we were heading down the M1 in Bedfordshire. But that discussion did get us wondering what wonderful change was in place for the business we were delivering the lorry load of office furniture to. And regardless of whether it was to be as significant as Woburn’s transformation back in the 70s, or simply a project to boot the business back into productivity… it didn’t matter. We were thrilled to be a part of it.
