CamHam’s top tips for surviving that Christmas to New Year lull in the office

Dec 6, 2016

Offices tend to be either really busy during those dreaded few days between Christmas and New Year, or dead. If it’s the former, then time will fly and your office desk will be working overtime; so you need not worry. However, if it’s the latter it can feel a bit like the graveyard shift…

Offices tend to be either really busy during those dreaded few days between Christmas and New Year, or dead. If it’s the former, then time will fly and your office desk will be working overtime; so you need not worry. However, if it’s the latter it can feel a bit like the graveyard shift…

So picture this. You’d hoped to take advantage of those quiet few days and have some time off. The problem is the decision on who could be off and who had to come in was made that day you were out to lunch. Fear not, though… all is not lost! There is a way to see this as a good thing.

Five reasons your office desk can be your sanctuary…
During that lull time between Christmas and New Year you can:

Feel comfortable operating at 80% and still be guilt free – Everyone else is on holiday! Let’s face it, the fairy lights flashing at home will far outgun the flashing of your phone, so it’s going to be a doddle to keep your office desk clear over the next few days. Bargain!
Finally go through the filing cabinet – Make the most of the peace and quiet and take stock of your office storage. Are you running out of space? Can you clear out some of the old stuff and get things ready for the new year?
Clear out your office pedestal – Give yourself permission to throw away the packaged flapjack that’s been sitting in your desk drawer for six months. You didn’t eat it back then, and you’re not going to eat it now.
Carry out a mini performance review with yourself – This quiet time is a great opportunity to consider the year that’s been. Assess your triumphs and understand your mishaps. If you need to give your office desk a thump, do so!
Draw up your personal work plans for 2017 (did you see how we’re avoiding the word ‘resolutions’?) – Consider what changes you would like to see in the office. Is there anything you can you suggest to your boss? Perhaps the office desks could be moved into a better formation. Perhaps the office storage could be updated. Work out what might make work life just that little bit easier.
And one bonus reason for good measure…

You can thank the stars that you don’t have to eat any more of Aunt Sophie’s mince pies – Your office chair will be grateful!
So, hopefully that’s given you some food for thought on how to make the most of that dead time between Christmas and New Year. And seriously, it’s often a time for fresh ideas that can include new office furniture or an office revamp. So if either of those are making it onto your ‘personal work plans for 2017’ then give us a ring. We’d love to start the new year with you!
