Fast and friendly
We’re big fans of new ideas, as you’ll already know, particularly when it comes to office furniture. And you also know that we’re not afraid of the odd whacky scheme. But when it comes to jumping on band wagons there are times, we reckon, you need to draw the line. Office fads are all very well and good, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…
So, with that in mind, we thought we’d investigate a few of the more recent office furniture fads and engage the ‘business sense’ side of our brains to offer our own more practical suggestions…
Office Furniture Fad 1: Hot Desking
It was a big 1990s thing, wasn’t it? Staff could turn up each day, grab an office desk (avec computer/laptop and phone) and crack on. It was heralded as an efficient use of space. The point it missed, however, is that employees actually like to feel they ‘belong’. And you know what? Their office desk is their patch in the bigger plot when it comes to work. They can hide stuff in their pedestal. They can leave a pic of their dog on the side. They can stash that half eaten flapjack for the next day. Hot desking simply doesn’t facilitate that.
CamHam’s practical office furniture alternative – Height adjustable office desks
Why not provide each employee with their own home away from home? We guarantee they’ll repay you with hard work, commitment and efficiency. So what do they want in an office desk? To find out more, we recommend you read our article entitled, “An office desk is just an office desk… Right?”.
Office Furniture Fad 2: Treadmill desks, exercise ball chairs, and hammocks
We confess, we’ve never sold any of those… but then we’ve never tried to. Treadmill desks sound like a great way to get those Fitbit step numbers up, but in reality it’s absurd, isn’t it? Exercise ball chairs sound like a health and safety disaster waiting to happen. And hammocks… well… just no!
CamHam’s practical office furniture alternative – Ergonomically designed office chairs
Call us old fashioned, but we think there’s nothing but good to be gained from providing staff with ergonomically designed office chairs. If you’d like to understand little more, we published a blog on the subject not long ago: "Ergonomic chairs… what gives?"
Office Furniture Fad 3: Vintage vehicles & mobile meeting rooms
Having a vintage vehicle stashed in an office has been very much the domain of the creative agency, we grant you. And we can’t say we’ve ever stocked any. But it was enough of a fad to hit minor headlines at times. The one that did make us chuckle, though, were mobile meeting rooms… Where do you store them? Ha ha. Anyway we, of course, have a few practical suggestions instead for you.
CamHam’s practical office furniture alternative – Get the meeting room furniture right
We could say, “Build it, and they will come…” and you’d get our drift. Get the meeting room furniture set up in whatever sized and shaped room you use, and it will work. We’ve written a blog entirely on meeting rooms and boardrooms, so you can find out more there. However, the key office furniture items you should be contemplating are meeting room tables, chairs and sideboards. Simples.
To finish off, please don’t think we poo poo every office furniture fad. It’s just that often our experience tells us that gimmicks don’t make staff happy or efficient.
