How You Should Be Sitting At Work, And The Long Term Benefits

Jul 6, 2015

Believe it or not but sitting properly at your desk is massively important, especially if your office is where you spend the majority of your waking hours.  Not sitting correctly can not only cause pain and discomfort, but also cause long term health ailments that could take months of physiotherapy to put right again.

Why is sitting properly so important?

Believe it or not but sitting properly at your desk is massively important, especially if your office is where you spend the majority of your waking hours.  Not sitting correctly can not only cause pain and discomfort, but also cause long term health ailments that could take months of physiotherapy to put right again.  As always, prevention is better than a cure, and here at CamHam Office Furniture, we believe in getting it right first time.

The art of sitting

There are a few key tips you should take into account when you’re sitting at your desk.

  • Keep your arms relaxed by your side
  • Balance your head, and try not to lean forward
  • Keep your screen approximately an arm’s length away from you
  • The top of your screen should be at eye level
  • Sit back in your chair for good back support
  • Keep your forearms parallel to the desk
  • Your feet should stay flat on the floor, or on a foot rest

Be aware of caring for your back

According to research, approximately 80% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives.  Back pain has been shown to cost the NHS more than £1 billion each year, and accounts for over 30 million lost working days a year.  One of the greatest tips we can give you is to move around.  Sitting still for long periods of time is damaging.  This causes joint stiffness and muscle fatigue, so the best thing to do is create a bit of movement in your day.  This can be something as simple as getting up and talking to your colleague instead of sending an email, or making regular trips to the water cooler or coffee machine.

Another way of ensuring you’re taking good care of your back, is taking a good look at your desk and chair.  Is it actually set up correctly for you?  Is your chair appropriately adjusted and providing your back with plenty of support?  If you feel like your chair isn’t right for you, then change it! We have plenty of chairs, including second hand office chairs, which will provide you with the support you need, day in and day out. What’s more is we have height adjustable desks, which means you could stand for part of the day too.  These are great at improving posture and correcting bad habits.  If you’re not sure about what would be the right option for you, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.  We’d love to hear from you.
