Let us first say that we agree when one’s sitting back in some comfy outdoor furniture for a lunch break, it should be just that… a break. But with the best will in the world that’s not always possible. Busy schedules, with peaks and troughs in workflow, can sometimes mean a squeezed in lunch meeting is a good idea.
So, with that in mind, and with better weather now on the horizon, we thought it worth reminding you of the benefits of being outside sometimes for work.
Five reasons to take your meetings outside…
Sometimes it’s worth getting casual… Away from the more formal nature of the office desk and chair, an outside meeting lets people relax a bit. Outside furniture that’s well designed, robust, and durable is a fabulous investment that aids outside lunch camaraderie and constructive meeting chatter. It’s worth it.
A change of scene gets the creative juices flowing… A physical step outside the box often leads to a mental shift in thinking too. The brain is treated to a change in stimuli on every level. The senses start to buzz. Whilst a group are sitting down to eat and meet around a picnic bench, people start to think differently.
Phones can fall silent… Getting people away from their desks, their laptops, and their phones, is a great way to reduce distraction and interference. Of course, that can happen in a meeting room too, but if a casual, brainstorming approach is what’s needed… outside works well. Seated around well designed outside furniture, like picnic benches, they can talk, discuss, debate and conjure up all sorts fresh ideas. The Post-Its can pile up whilst they’re out, and be dealt with when they get back to their desks.
Break some bad habits… People are creatures of habit. When they walk into a meeting room, odds on they’ll sit in the same chair they usually do, probably next to the same person, and think the same ‘when can I go home?’ thoughts. Encourage a change of behaviour by offering them comfortable outdoor furniture in a nice outside setting and you’ll be encouraging them to shift into a different state of mind about the meeting.
Get people sitting differently, and their thoughts change too… Office chairs are great. They’re often ergonomically designed to ensure comfort and support for long term use. But that doesn’t mean your staff have to sit in them ALL day! Taking them outside for a meeting, and placing them on outdoor chairs, will not only get them altering their posture but they’ll be thinking differently too.
