Office fitness is becoming more accepted in the business world, and there’s been a lot of research in recent years to support its popularity.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2008 estimated that for every hour we sit in front of the TV after the age of 25, an individual’s life expectancy is reduced by almost 22 minutes.
There has been an increase of 112% in the risk of diabetes amongst those sitting longest compared to those who sat least. Coupled to this is an increase of 147% in cardiovascular events (those incidents causing damage to the heart muscle). And if that’s not enough, physical inactivity has proven to increase breast and colon cancer. This all adds up to be quite terrifying, which why the team at CamHam take office fitness so seriously.
On average we now sit at our desks for 5 hours and 41 minutes per day, this problem has been phrased by many scientists as “sitting is the new smoking”, and all this inactivity is building to become a huge medical issue in the near future.
It has been suggested that the solution isn't to sit for six hours at work and then head to the gym afterward, because evidence suggests that the negative effects of extended sitting can't be countered by brief bouts of strenuous exercise. The answer is incorporating standing, pacing and other forms of activity into your normal day—and standing at your desk for part of it is the easiest way of doing so. Here at CamHam we have height adjustable desks to offer our customers this excellent solution.
